Hidden amongst a treasure trove of tropical plants, trees and orchids, the chalets of the Sepilok Nature Resort are a mere 5 minute walk from the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre inside the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. This 4,300 hectare virgin jungle reserve is also the precious home of orang-utans being rehabilitated back to the wild.

The Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC)
The SORC helps orang-utans that have been orphaned, injured, captured illegally or displaced gradually rehabilitate back to the wild. This centre retrains orang-utans by weaning them onto the forest to achieve full independence back in the wild. The orang-utan's forest diet is supplemented by 2 daily feedings at 10:00 and 15:00. There is also a mini-theatre that screens an infomation video throughout the day.

You can also choose to explore a number of different trails around the reserve ranging from 250m to 5kms allowing good opportunities to view birdlife, orang-utans and different jungle habitats such as mangrove swamps.

Rooms and Facilities

The Sepilok Nature Resort offers all the comforts and amenities needed after a humid day of trekking in the forest reserve or returning from visiting the orang-utans. Back-to-back with the reserve, the resort is perfectly integrated into its lush rainforest settings. The resort is a manicured compound with boardwalks, nature trails (including an orchid garden) and chalets set around a peaceful lake.

The quality timber chalets are spacious and face a beautiful lake. Each come with attached bathroom with hot water, shower and bathing tub, ceiling fan and air-conditioning.

Food & Beverage

Meals are served in the central building under covered terraces in the main area. Meals are a combination of delicious Asian and Western cuisine. There is also an ala carte lunch available for visitors to drop in and try.

Joining and Finishing information

Being located less than 25 minutes from Sandakan town, the Sepilok Nature Resort is the ideal starting or ending point for all the other wildlife destinations around Sandakan i.e. Sukau / Kinbatangan, Turtle islands, Lankayan. We highly recommend joining a stay at Lankayan and / or a wildlife safari at Sukau to complete your trip.

Our Say

A trip to Sandakan would not be complete without visiting the rehabilitation centre. The orang-utan's antics are sure to delight such as food pinching, grooming and mischief. If you're lucky, you may meet the inseparable Romeon and Juliette, a pair of very photogenic and cuddly young orang-utans that love to pose for the camera. Sepilok Nature Resort is the most outstanding resort around the area. The chalets are spacious and very comfortable. Warm and friendly Borneon hospitality greets you from the moment you arrive. We highly recommend this excellent resort.
